Supporting salt iodisation in Indonesia

13 Avril 2023 -

Salt iodisation is utilised worldwide, safeguarding against goiter and severe intellectual disabilities in children. Iodine is an essential nutrient for human health and well-being, but procuring iodine can be challenging for salt-producers in low- and middle-income countries.

GAIN supported the implementation of a pilot project in East and Central Java, to establish a sustainable business model for potassium iodate distribution. The potassium iodate was procured through the GPF and distributed through the Cooperative Mahyra Utama Sejahtera.

Meet Ms Nurul Hayati, an entrepreneur and salt producer from Bangil, Pasuruan who is part of the network of producers having access to potassium iodate, as well as free training sessions on quality control. "Food without salt is tasteless. Salt without iodine is less beneficial" says Nurul.

Learn how GAIN and the GPF are supporting salt producers in Indonesia to overcome their supply challenges.

This project was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Givewell.
